The Effects of Votive Candles on a Relaxed and Pleasant Atmosphere

Votive candles are among the most frequently used type of candles together with pillars and tapers; they are actually ideal to be used in most circumstances that require a very relaxed and pleasant atmosphere. Whether you choose to use them in the living-room, the bathroom or the kitchen, votive candles make excellent decorations either on the tables, in niches or room corners. The small dimensions allow their usage in aesthetic combinations meant to focus the attention on special interior decoration details; consequently, never underestimate the potential of votive candles! We call votive any circular candle with a two inches diameter that is almost equally high.

Though now used in almost any household, votive candles were originally designed for the religious services, being placed on the altar or in front of representations of Jesus or the Blessed Virgin. Votive candles are usually combined with other types of candles particularly during ceremonies, and the favorite colors for the more sober occasions are white, gold and silver. Aromatherapy centers and SPA saloons also use votive candles for a very comfortable, almost magical atmosphere that makes the treatment a true joy. The scent included in some of the votives contributes to nervous relaxation and stress alleviation.

We should also mention the fact the votive candles are ideal for bulk purchases; they usually come in special packs and, when ordered on the Internet, it is much easier to get discount prices as nobody buys two or three of each. Even the votive candles made of pure bees wax are a lot cheaper than any other types of candles, particularly due to the reduced dimensions and the versatility of usage modes. There are all sorts of votive candles especially designed for the holiday season: some are even colored or scented in the most suggestive of ways.

For instance votive candles made of bay berry wax enjoy an enormous popularity since they are usually burnt on Christmas and their natural scent is associated with this great Christian celebration. People who enjoy designing their own Christmas decorations make use of votive candles in unique decorative combinations: for instance white votives can be sprayed with some sparkling substances like liquid bronze. The effect is great particularly when the candles are included in larger arrangements with pine cones and fir tree branches. Placed on the chimney or on small tables near the fir tree, votive candles add up to the charm of a magic evening.

Wall Candle Holder – Real or Electric

I have a cousin who lives outside of Denver, Colorado. A few weeks ago, he called me to get some information on my opinion of different types of wall candle holders for his log cabin home in the Rocky Mountains.

He was remodeling his living room and den. Because of the rustic theme of his log cabin home, he was asking me for ideas or suggestions on what might fit into the decor of these two rooms.

I told him for me to really help him in his search for the perfect wall candle holders, I would have to take the trip out to his home and have a look at what each of these rooms has in them. This way I could make an informed decision on the types of wall candle holders that would match up with the theme of each of these two rooms. Besides, I haven’t been out there for a visit in quite some time and I was eager to visit with him and enjoy the beautiful Colorado Rockies.

A few days later I had booked a flight to Denver and rented a car.

It was a Saturday morning when I pulled into his driveway. Before I left for the trip to Colorado, I jotted down a few questions on a notebook that I wanted to ask my cousin once I got to his house. These questions are basic wall candle holder questions on what type of wall candle holders he might be looking for.

The first question I asked was if he was looking for wall candle holders to hold real candles or was he looking for electric wall candle holders. Electric wall candle holders are actually electric lights with bulbs that are in the shape of a candle flame.

He told me that he was open to installing both real candle holders and electric wall candle holders. He informed me that two of the wall candle holders, being installed in the den, will be hard wired to the wiring already in the wall, but in the living room he would like to install wall candle holders that use real candles for light. This way he could use scented candles to freshen up the room.

The next thing we did was to walk into the living room and see what types of furnishings are in the room. Sometimes the smaller accents of a room’s furnishings are more compatible with wall lighting fixtures than the larger more pronounced pieces of furniture in the room.

This was a large living room. He had two large oak framed chairs and a large couch that matched. Large deep cushions filled out both the chairs and the couch. Earth tone stripes crisscrossed was the pattern of the covers for the both the chairs and couch. Also in the room are two recliners. One of the recliners is black leather and the other is micro fiber in a beautiful royal blue.

The log walls in the room gave the room a rustic feel and the stone fireplace going up the wall was the focal point of the room. The floor was a plush pile carpet in a medium brown.

I couldn’t help but notice that bronze accents were all about the room. On one wall was a bronze wall sculpture of several elk. On another wall was a large bronze metal wall art sun.

It was on the wall with the large bronze sun that he wanted to hang a wall candle holder on each side of this metal wall art. After thinking about it for a few minutes, I suggested that he should go with an open wall sconce candle holder made of wood. Something that would hold a pillar candle at least four inched in diameter and eight to ten inches tall.

The second set of wall candle holders were to be hung on the wall directly above the stone mantle of the fireplace. Here I noticed that he had wrought iron fireplace tools on a stand over to the left of the fireplace. He also had a wrought iron screen placed directly in front of the open fireplace. It was so obvious that wrought iron wall candle holders would be the perfect match for the wall above the fireplace mantle. He agreed.

So now we moved on to the den. This was a magnificent room. The floors are hardwood floors. As with all the walls in this home, they are all log walls. What struck my attention was a gray stone two sided fireplace going straight up through the ceiling, separating the den from the study. The furniture in this room was all black leather. There are five chairs, a couch and a love seat. There are also two coffee tables and five end tables. The table tops are made of black smoked glass and the framework supporting the glass was pewter.

On one wall was hanging a medium size tapestry of a mountain lake. On another wall was a large wooden wall clock about five feet in diameter. He told me that he intended to install a wall candle holder on each side of the tapestry and another set of wall candle holders on each side of the wall clock.

After looking around the room and contemplating for a while, I came to the conclusion that a wrought iron candle holder on each side of the tapestry would be the perfect solution. He liked the idea and decided to go with battery powered candle lamps.

The large wall clock already had two rather ugly hard wired wall lights on each side. He said that these two wall lamps have been an eye sore to him for quite some time. He just never got around to changing them out to something more attractive. That is when I suggested that electric pewter wall candle lanterns would improve the overall look of the room. He said that wall candle lanterns had never crossed his mind, but it was a good idea and he would make the change.

My cousin wrote down all of my suggestions. I gave him a great website that had all the information he would need to explore all the suggestions I made. Within a month my cousin had ordered all his new candle wall lighting fixtures and had them up and working brilliantly.

Wall candle holders are a small touch that has a large effect on the overall persona of a room. With a little thought to the theme of any room, these charming additions will bring out the artful creativity and personal satisfaction you are looking for…

Tealight Candle Holders

Can I use oven bake/air dry clay to make candle holders?

Can I use ovenbake/airdry clay to make candle holders?
Is it possible to use ovenbake or airdry clay to make a candle holder? Specifically, the candle holder’s design would be similar to this one:

http://www.atticshoppe.com/images/porcel…

The tealight goes inside and light and heat escape through the little windows and doors.

Or would it be safer to alter the design to have a glass globe to hold the tealight, like this design:

http://www.katescottage.net/images/house…

Is this something that ought not be attempted with clays that aren’t fired in a kiln?

I also can’t access those sites so I don’t know the size and shape of candle holder you’re wanting.

The main thing for using either an air-dry clay or a polymer clay (also called oven-bake clay like Premo, Kato, Fimo, Sculpey, Cernit) is not to have the clay too close to the top of the flame. The heat directly over the flame will be much hotter than the areas beside it. So if your votive candle holder had a large enough space above the candle, it would be okay. (Paper doesn’t burn unless it’s really close to a direct flame until the famous 451 degrees Fahrenheit, and polymer clays won’t actually burn till they reach 385 though you wouldn’t want them up even as high as 200 or so because you might smell the normal smell of curing polymer clay.)

We do make lots of candle holders with polymer clay though, from the ones to hold votive candles in, to actual taper candleholders. Those can be made from solid clay only, but more often they’re made over some kind of armature at least part way.

If the object is to see the light shine through the holder with a votive candle in it, you could just cover a glass container with clay, then cut holes in it where the windows and doors are, leaving some areas for ventilation somewhere (in a “roof” you’d put on it made from clay or metal or whatever). And if you were using polymer clay, you could instead use a translucent (or colored translucent) clay in those areas, or even use a clay that has some translucent in it naturally, which when thin will let the light shine through—even some of the dark colors of polymer clay are somewhat or very translucent.

If you’re interested in checking out votive candle holders made with polymer clay (in various ways), take a look at this page at my polymer clay “encyclopedia” site:

(…under the “Glass” category, click on the subcategory called “Votives and Light Shining Through”
…and perhaps also click on “Nightlights, Lamps, Screens” in case you’re interested in that type of set up)

P.S. If you’re interested in making small “houses” from polymer clay, that could be done in various ways too and there’s info on this page:

Candle Lanterns

candle lanterns 10 Candle Lanterns
How can I make simple lanterns for outdoor use without candles?

I have some events coming up in a forest/wooded area that requires some paths to be lit. The first thing I thought of was paper bag lanterns, which would indeed create the atmosphere I need, but I am afraid of the whole candle/paper/forest aspect. Is there any kind of cheap, simple, DIY lantern I could make? It needs to have an old-timey feel. No flashlights or anything. Please help!

You can still use candles safely if you want to make lanterns from cans (like 1 lb coffee cans) that will create that old-time, pimitive, rustic look.

Remove any paper label and punch the metal with a big nail either randomly or in a pattern to let the light show through the can.

You can leave the cans shiny metal or paint the outside of the can in the color of your choice in a heat resistant paint.

Put a few inches of sand inside to weigh down each can and push the bottom of a glass votive candle holder down an inch or two into the sand to secure it. Place a votive candle inside the holder.

Even if someone kicks over a can by accident the sand and the votive holder will contain or put out the flame to prevent any problems.

Another alternative is to get some of the new solar lights to line the path. They come in all sorts of styles and have become fairly inexpensive.
